This past week I had the pleasure of attending the Latin American Association of Insurance Agencies 56th annual conference on beautiful Marco Island. It was truly invigorating to witness the enthusiasm and renewed optimism for the industry’s future following the news in our last edition of the drastic reduction in property insurance claims and lawsuits in Florida following the legislative reforms of 2022-2023 – and the resulting rate decreases. The story was picked up by state and national news media, quoting my perspective that “the reforms eliminated the guaranteed one-way attorney fees for plaintiffs that provided a gross incentive to sue, with fees in some cases that were five or six times greater than the claim amount itself. We’ve all been paying for the excessive and often frivolous litigation that resulted.”

The other thing I noticed consistently throughout the conference was the collaboration among agents, and among their agencies and the leaders of this legacy association. It’s a spirit many of us in the insurance business share and one that I shared with the good folks at Demotech, who honored me last week with a feature on my career in the latest edition of The Demotech Difference magazine (starting on page 14). The interview reveals the lessons of my 40+ year career, in both my professional and personal lives. We talked about concepts such as building meaningful relationships, fostering collaboration, listening, observing, engaging with the world around you, and lifting others as you go.
Ultimately, as was proven again and again by what I witnessed at the conference, it’s about helping others find solutions to problems. It’s been a consistent thread in my many meetings in offices, board rooms, and in regulatory and legislative workshops and hearings, here in Florida and throughout the country. And it’s quite magical and powerful. I’d love to hear your thoughts at [email protected].
Up next in this edition: the latest on our Florida insurance regulator’s efforts to define a “disproportionate” number of claims-handling complaints in triggering market conduct exams and on planned changes in claims mediation, the Citizens Property Insurance ongoing court challenges to arbitration, the big jury award that was overturned and the $5.6 million elevator verdict, the call for including nature-based solutions in federal flood insurance risk and pricing, plus the surprising way insurance and financial companies are using artificial intelligence that’s boosting hiring. Thanks for reading!
