A couple of days from now on May 1, dozens of housing experts will convene in St Petersburg to talk. And who is leading the conversation? None other than former state Senator Jeff Brandes who I often call the velvet hammer. When you listen to this 25-second spot, Senator Brandes is just doing what he does….saying what needs to be said, doing what needs to be done, and making sure all those around benefit. It doesn’t matter if you want to hear it, think it doesn’t need to be said or disagree with his premise, Jeff Brandes will ensure sound public policy, and the actions to get it accomplished, are communicated. It doesn’t matter if you are homeless or live in a palatial home on the beach, you are going to hear the truth…no matter the topic.
This week’s truth is about housing – the lack of it, the expense of it, and the wish for it by thousands of Floridians who would like a roof over their heads, or for that matter, be better able to afford the one they have since it costs more to maintain existing housing. Those in this latter category are called “housing cost-burdened” where 30% or more of their income is spent on housing costs. U.S. Census Bureau data shows that 40% of renters nationwide meet the housing cost-burdened definition.
No single public policy can serve as a silver bullet to improve housing outcomes or for that matter, the affordability of a comfortable place to live. But rest assured…Jeff Brandes will not hesitate to do everything he can to address this urgent need, including talking about it. I hope you will support this day-long Florida Housing Summit, consider attending, and if you haven’t looked at the Florida Policy Project, you should!
