For those of you who haven’t seen the video that went viral last week, a 74 year-old Southwest Florida man did what many of us would do for our animals – save their life even if it might put ours in danger.
A couple of days before Thanksgiving, Richard Wilbanks saw an alligator run up the pond bank in Estero and grab his 3 month-old Cavalier King Charles puppy named Gunner. Mr. Wilbanks, smoking a cigar while walking Gunner, instinctively chased the alligator into the pond and grabbed the alligators mouth to open it so his dog could run away. And we might add, he didn’t even lose his cigar!
The entire ordeal was caught on a camera installed near the pond by the Florida Wildlife Federation to capture wildlife activity. You can watch it here. Mr. Wilbanks didn’t flinch when he saw what happened and the kind of fearless readers of our newsletter would most likely do the same thing. I guess we must issue the standard warning though that says, “Don’t try this at home!” Thanks to all of you who are fearless and love animals like those of us here at LMA!
See you on the trail,
Lisa
