The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is enjoying a weeklong reauthorization while Congress decides on a potential six-month extension in lieu of meaningful long-term reform. It’s another reason we here work so hard at promoting private flood insurance market solutions and mitigation efforts. Speaking of which, one of our longtime (and amazing!) Florida insurance regulators has received a national honor, in part, for her role in encouraging a private flood market.
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) recently bestowed the distinguished Robert Dineen Award on Florida Deputy Insurance Commissioner Susanne Murphy. The award honors long serving regulators who have made an outstanding contribution to the advancement of the insurance profession and state regulation. If you know Susanne, you know that she is all of that and more!
An insurance educator at heart to many she has mentored, the award caps a 30-year career in insurance. Susanne was South Carolina’s first female insurance director in 1995 and has been with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation for the past five years, most recently as special deputy commissioner with oversight of market regulation. The NAIC noted her advocacy in Florida’s developing private flood insurance market and working with regulators in other states to follow suit.
Susanne was also recognized for her “critical role in Florida’s response and recovery following Hurricanes Matthew, Hermine, Irma and Michael, which impacted the state over the course of three consecutive hurricane seasons,” by the NAIC. She joins past Florida regulatory executive Dineen Award-winners Belinda Miller, Rich Robleto, and Dr. Ray Spudek. Congratulations Susanne!
