Happy New Year! Over the holidays I had the opportunity to catch up on some inspiring reading and one such article was in Forbes magazine. Forbes’ Coaches Council author David Garrison cites a 2017 study of 3,000 people, where 70% said they felt there were barriers to asking questions. Garrison gave sage advice to what he calls “authentically curious leadership,” a practice that leaders develop to get answers to questions like “Can you tell me more about xxx” versus “Don’t you think…”
Authentically curious leaders want to know how the group will know a great decision if/when it occurs because they know what they think themselves and learn from what others think and have experienced. As we race into 2019, think about being curious and fostering an environment where the best day is reaching agreement on what success looks like, and the path to get there is open and honest every step of the way!
To quote Sir Richard Branson: “Train people well enough so they can leave and treat them well enough so they don’t want to!”
