As we enter the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season next week, we need to remember that storm planning should include our pets as well. Where to go, what to do? Stay or evacuate? It’s a great time to remind ourselves that our own pets, as well as those animals in shelters, need to be considered in the event of a disaster. It’s a mission that a very special 12 year old boy has taken to heart.
Thousands of animals are euthanized every year at some shelters if they are not adopted in time due to limited space; it’s made even worse after a hurricane with all of the added lost and abandoned animals. So to help combat animal euthanasia, one Newark, New Jersey boy started his own business making fashionable bow ties for animals in shelters to aid in their adoption.
Darius Brown loves his dogs and was inspired to act when he learned about the displacement of so many animals after hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Darius’ business, aptly named Beaux and Paws, has since donated 200 bows to shelters across the country. He plans to donate at least 150 more by the end of this summer as he visits shelters and adoption agencies in multiple states.
Darius has shown us what power is held in just a bit of creativity and a world of compassion for others, especially our furry friends, as he himself has had to overcome his own speech, comprehension and fine-motor-skill delays.

See you on the trail & remember to keep an eye out this week on Tropical Storm Dorian!
