For Easter Sunday, we had a house full of legislative folks, regulatory experts and others who were debating all things Florida property insurance. One side of the room (figuratively) said that those who regulate insurance companies should do so with a heavy hand and in essence dictate many of the companies’ practices so that consumers are protected. The other side of the room said that regulation should be facilitative and that when insurance companies compete without a regulatory heavy hand, consumers win because there will be more options in a facilitative regulator environment.
The legislature has legislators, as expected, that are on both sides of this debate in the House and Senate and the testimony in legislative committees bears that out. One of the many reasons we work so hard and produce this newsletter is that we enjoy the feedback you provide about many of the topics we publish. Not a week goes by without email traffic from stakeholders on both sides of the regulation style topic. For those who believe in the dictatorial style, it’s downright comical to listen to words like “punish the companies” and “shut them down.” On the other side, we read where insurance companies have talented professionals who should be left alone and that the market dynamics will help consumers decide who they choose for their coverage.
I am curious what you think. Remember, we can’t do what we do unless we hear from you and, most importantly that you keep doing what you do!
For those of you who took part in the annual Red Dog-Blue Dog Celebrity Bartender Benefit for our dear furry friends on March 21, we raised $49,705! Legislators competed in two teams (Red & Blue) for the most tips. The money went to the Tallahassee Animal Shelter Foundation, Leon County Humane Society, and Last Hope Rescue to support their operations. As a presenting sponsor, Lisa Miller & Associates is thankful to the many hundreds of people who turned out for this very worthy (and fun!) fundraiser. So great to see our friends, clients, and colleagues and catch-up! We hope to see you next year.
Speaking of spirit, here’s a very special Easter bonnet picture that our loyal newsletter reader Gregory Holder in Tampa sent of one of his pooches. Absolutely precious and we hope all of you had a good holiday weekend.
Have a great week and hope to see you in Tallahassee soon!
