Like many of you, when storms come, we call our circle of friends and disaster experts to talk through the “what if” scenarios and to think of ways we can help. One of those in my world is Florida’s former Director of Emergency Management, Bryan Koon. Bryan spent a half dozen years keeping Florida “safe” and his common sense approach to property insurance combined with efficient and smart disaster recovery practices is very refreshing. Continuing Bryan’s strong pre- and post-disaster best practices is Florida’s current Director of Emergency Management, Kevin Guthrie, whom our readers see often here as we follow his leadership closely and applaud him for all he has and continues to do for Florida.
In Bryan’s spare time, you often see him in deep physical exercise, running at a fast pace, sometimes in Tallahassee’s summer heat. So it comes as no surprise that his three sons are athletes. I follow Bryan’s son Patrick. Patrick, in my opinion, is a world class runner, with the drive and determination his father has instilled in him, matching the same drive Bryan has to make the situation before and after a disaster “better.” (And son Luke just started college and is on the golf team!) The picture above is of Patrick who set a new course record of 15:15 in the 5K race at Jacksonville’s Cecil Field Invitational Cross Country tourney last week. He was also nominated for the Big Bend Prep Athlete of the Week and the National Boys Performer of the Week.
Patrick reminds us of the Doobie Brothers song “It Keeps You Runnin’” and we hope you keep on keeping on too! Up next, the things that keep all of us running: hurricanes, COVID, and building collapse, plus the unexpected case of the alligator versus the drone!
