Just ask this Jersey Shore landmark

Mike’s Seafood Restaurant in flood-prone Sea Isle, NJ

Speaking of flooding, there’s a place called Mike’s Seafood that has been a staple in the historic fish alley of Sea Isle, New Jersey for more than 100 years.  Though the location is well-known and visited by locals, Mike’s Seafood becomes one of the busiest restaurants in the area during the touristy summer months.

Mike’s Seafood was hit hard in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, lost equipment and supplies.  Due to its location so close to the shoreline, every storm season it faces the chance of flooding that would again threaten closures and loss of income for owner, Mike Monichetti.  This worry caused Mike to reach out to the Flood Design Team at Floodproofing.com to come up with a solution.

Workers install the Flex-Cover® Door Flood Barrier to protect the openings of the restaurant

After reviewing the location and elevation of the structure, the team reviewed a variety of floodproofing solutions that could help protect the historic location and its contents.  Together, they settled on using the Flex-Cover ® Door Flood Barrier to protect the openings of the restaurant.  The Flex Cover, created by ILC Dover, is a standard-sized door and window flood barrier known for its ease of deployment and the minimal intrusion the installation causes to the structure.  The barriers are easily stored and deployed before a flood event, making it the perfect solution for a business like Mike’s Seafood.  The Flex-Cover Door is also an FM approved floodproofing product.

FM Approval is a third-party certification of loss prevention products that hold the highest standards in protection.  FM Approved floodproofing solutions go through rigorous testing and must meet strict ratings for debris impact and water seepage.  These ANSI/FM 2510 standards are required in many areas when designing a structure in the floodplain.

This product and service provided by Floodproofing.com allows the team of Mike’s Seafood to feel at ease and ready for the increasing threat of floods.  Please watch this case study video to learn more about Flex Cover, Floodproofing.com, and its complete portfolio of flood solutions and resources for designing and building in flood zones.
