This week is the 6th week of a 9 week legislative session. The key focus of the House and Senate is the $90+ Billion budget and the negotiations that will commence later this week. Will the House agree with the Senate to provide state employee pay raises? Will the Senate concur with the House to not fund Visit Florida since the House believes Florida’s sand and sun is enough to attract visitors and that Visit Florida’s marketing efforts are a waste of money?
It is very frustrating that these issues are top of mind and none of the legislators, except for Senator Jeff Brandes, wants to engage in what Senator Brandes says is a “bigger, bolder, better” conversation about the state of the property insurance industry. Will the legislature come to terms with real hurricane losses, man-made losses primarily driven by roofers and their lawyers, and rising reinsurance costs? Only time will tell but not much time! Tick tock…4 more weeks left of session! Next up is a deeper dive into the last legislative week and some fun stories to start your week!
