I am working on some projects this session both personally as a volunteer and professionally as part of my consulting firm. The days are long as we lead up to the January 11, 2022 session opening of the Florida Legislature.
All of the back and forth strategy to work on a playbook to promote good public policy takes hours of research and data and most importantly, lining up allies and opponents, much like what is involved in sports. But I do my best to not take the legislative duties I work on too seriously and I consider myself lucky to have terrific team members in my orbit (even those who oppose a position I take). In other words, I try to keep it all in perspective.
Recently, a longtime friend of mine in the legislative process who recently retired named Steve Uhlfelder attended his grandson’s sporting event. He shared with us the reminders (above) we should consider that the Walton County (Florida) Athletic League posted for all the fans and players to see when entering the ball field.
What was so striking to me was that these reminders were titled “Reminders From Your Child.” How often do we say that we learn so much from our children and grandchildren? With all the pressures we face, life could be so much easier if we had the right perspective about projects we launch or worries we have. Life is about choosing to transform trials and tribulations into “aha moments” and intentionally engaging in a journey to find happiness, satisfaction, learning, and growth. This doesn’t mean one is lazy or unengaged; rather, it’s about choosing a path that brings joy in all things and remembering the fundamentals of the game! Please take some time to be good to you and soak in what the Walton County athletes are telling us which is to put “it” in perspective!
