I have the privilege of working with several industry sectors including those in government and those working to affect change in government. I grew up in the day where NOT saying something was as important as saying something and as one of my mentors taught me, “you learn nothing with your mouth open.”
Yet in today’s world there doesn’t seem to be any communication strategy or filter with professionals posting ideas, insults, and insinuations for the entire social media world to see. Instead of less is more, the theme is more is more. Case in point was a conversation I had with a firm where I shared a posting of a vacant position that seemed like an oddly titled job classification. I asked this competitor of the firm that posted the job why on earth the posting was out there and even more importantly, why would a company advertise the position when the title was political in nature and the position would be best filled by word of mouth versus telling the whole world of the talent sought?
The response I got from the competitor firm was “Some play checkers, others play chess.” How apropos in today’s world, where behind the scenes strategy, thinking before speaking, and never showing your hand are all art forms for a winning strategy. I hope those reading this will recognize that playing chess is a great way to win in the business game and a simple game of checkers just won’t cut it! Would love your feedback on what you are doing to keep your secrets safe and win the game!
