One of our industry leaders shares a daily message with his team. This past week, here’s what he wrote… a powerful way to start your week!
Hello Team and here’s to a Fabulous Friday. Wow! John chose one of my all-time favorite quotes from one of my all-time personal heroes – Winston Churchill.
Today’s Statement of Strength:
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
-Winston Churchill
John teaches us the following today:
“The question is when I look at adversity, do I see the problem or do I see the possibility?”
“When I was a young man in my 20s, Robert Schuller wrote a book called, Move Ahead with Possibility Thinking. I’ll never forget how I read and reread and marked up that book. Because basically, he was saying, ‘What would you do if in every challenging situation, you saw the possibilities in it?’ Well, the answer is you would proceed, you would go forward. The problem is instead of possibility thinking, we have problem thinking. Today, I would just encourage you see the possibilities and watch them become possible in your life.”
Here are my thoughts this morning as I contemplate this great Churchill quote. We’ve all experienced organizational changes, life changes, family changes and the like. All of us will certainly be faced with situations that could be perceived as either an opportunity or a difficulty. I find I am frequently faced with ‘difficult opportunities’ with challenges, opportunities, relationships and ways to raise my game and ways to add value to others.
Sometimes, it takes courage to have an unpleasant conversation that must occur for improvement. Often, it takes the strength to get through a relationship hurdle in order to see the other side of success. Many times, it takes self-reflection and maturity to see where we can improve ourselves next time around.
What you need to know is this – difficulties and opportunities will both exist. Thinking that no difficulties will arise will only set yourself up for failure and disappointment. Some days will simply be bombs – it will seem as if all of the momentum or traction you have gained has blown up in your face.
Just don’t give up. Tomorrow – or your next meeting – is a chance to try again to see the opportunity in every difficulty. And, you’ll see the change momentum you’ve created is still really there.
In service,
Bob
