I know this summer has been grueling with the hotter than usual heat and that means we all want to stay indoors. For parents that have kids, that can be a chore and a challenge when trying to think of ideas to keep children busy and their brains occupied.
One idea is to start a sort of summer reading book club where parents and their children can spend fun time reading books on a variety of topics. When I was growing up, my mom who was a teacher, would read aloud to me and she taught me to read aloud as well. I was amazed at how much more I absorbed from the reading material when I read it out loud. To this day, when I write press releases, white papers, or material for websites, I read the content out loud and always find my errors because I hear them. My mom taught me the relationship between words and sounds to help me be a better reader and of course, my TV time was limited so that I would stick my nose in a book.
I was also required to talk about what I was reading which gave me the opportunity to learn how to connect the dots and exercise critical thinking. Let’s face it: reading stimulates our imagination and expands our understanding of the world. It helps us develop our language and listening skills and prepares us to understand the written work like no other exercise can! Hope you are inspired to turn off the TV and your phone and stick your nose in a book!
Speaking of reading, you will enjoy our stories for this edition. We would love to have you author a 400 or so word article for us to share with our readers. Grab your pen or keyboard and write it so we can read it! Have a great week!
