Many of you know I have some health issues that I am managing with the grace of the good Lord and so I was particularly intrigued by the recent story about USF Health where they are researching how a patient’s voice and artificial intelligence (AI) technology can detect and help diagnose a disease. The National Institutes of Health is the major sponsor working with scientists who said they believe they may even be able to detect unhappiness…from a person’s speech.
I contemplated this idea that hearing someone’s speech can indicate their joy or lack of it. I don’t think we need scientists to tell us that! While I am thrilled that AI can be added to medical technology advances, we all don’t need to have AI tell us if someone is unhappy! All we need to do is pay attention. Case in point: At a restaurant recently, our server was very efficient but we could hear her monotonous tone, and even more telling, we could see the sadness in her eyes. I couldn’t help it and stopped her from serving us a water refill and asked, “Would I be intruding if I asked you if today is a particularly tough day?” Her eyes filled with tears and thanked me for asking and then told me her story.
I encourage each of our readers to be aware and engaged with those around you. All we have to do is ask…we don’t need scientists or AI to tell us our brothers and sisters need help! Have a great week!
