In a recent viral video, two of Florida’s most curious creatures can be seen making rare, yet endearing contact with a young human boy. The manatees, also known as sea cows, decided to stop by and greet an unsuspecting native Florida family of surfers. To be sure, the Blais family was in for a surprise when they visited Fort Pierce Inlet Park on the Fourth of July, as the large aquatic mammals approached and showed off their playful personalities.
While surfing, Leesa Blais says one of her sons, Evan, became nervous initially, mistaking the two manatees for sharks – that is, until one of the animals stole Evan’s surfboard away from him. The rest of the Blais family can be heard in the background of the video as the manatee, floating gracefully on its back, attempted to ‘Shanghai’ young Evan Blais by stealing his surfboard right from underneath him! The rogue manatee gleefully held the surfboard between its flippers for a moment before ending its prank and returning to Evan. All the action was caught on dad Brandon’s waterproof camera.
It’s not uncommon for manatees to take interest in humans and their water-related activities as they are often seen weaving between kayakers or swimming up to take a closer look at unwary swimmers. They are, indeed, known for their curiosity and mild manners.
Hailing from Florida themselves, the Blais family was acquainted with manatees, but the two boys noted they’ve never interacted so closely with the creatures before. Leesa Blais said her sons, who are entering sixth grade, are absolutely elated.
