For this newsletter edition we open with a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who taught us to celebrate service as a way to build a better future. I often spend a bit of time to read the many speeches of our nation’s heroes from days gone by.
In 1967, Dr. King presented remarks at Stanford University titled “The Other America” where he advocated for economic and social equality. As I read the speech last week, I was struck by how his remarks about economic disparity could be applicable to the political disparity of today. I started my career in Florida’s Capitol when Republicans and Democrats ate lunch together, held civil negotiations, and talked about their differences but made sure their focus was on common sense. We all know what tomorrow could have in store for our communities and our nation and it is my hope that we simply focus on what makes sense.
Tomorrow, I will spend the day on Zoom and phone calls listening to many of you who have great suggestions on ways to get our federal and state elected officials to remember what they learned in kindergarten, frankly! I look forward to hearing what your thoughts are about ways we can work together so that future generations can, as Dr. King said in this famous speech, “…grow up in the sunlight of opportunity.” Please keep reading this edition of our newsletter for some fascinating facts, fidgets and fascinations!
