Scientia!

This weekend I had the pleasure of hosting three young guns at my breakfast table.  These young professionals have a dream…they want to encourage K-12 students to fall in love with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) in school AND once the students graduate, have them stay in North Florida.

Those that know me know that I love to chase a dream and a vision.  But this one?  Gonna take a lot of work!  I met these young gun dreamers (they are volunteers with full time jobs!) two years ago when they reached out to me to use The Conference Room for a planning meeting.  I share The Conference Room at no charge to charitable organizations and nonprofit community groups who want to make the world a better place.  Once in a while, I will ask the group to attend their event just so I can keep up with what’s happening in my community.

When I did that with this group, I was astonished. Two of the three are brothers and their dad is a local pediatrician.  The third works for the Office of Financial Regulation and is a finance wizard.  Scientia (Latin for science), is the name of their nonprofit, and is just launching.  Its mission is “engage students to be passionate about innovation and creativity, by encouraging an independent learning experience to ensure a strong and sustainable society.  It is our desire to bring S.T.E.A.M. resources to communities that are lacking access and those with learning disabilities. We seek to unite diverse communities that equally demand a world of opportunity and hope.  A world where their dreams are fortified in the scientific and technological strengths of S.T.E.A.M. which are the pillars of our global society.  The greatness of one is rooted in the collective endeavors of all.  Together we can forge a brighter future.”  You can read more here.

So many of us in this industry lament the fact we are losing the insurance talent to retirement or boredom or both and we wish we had a bench of young folks to help us serve our policyholders.  Maybe Scientia is the ticket?  Do we all work together to see what it can do in North Florida and open chapters throughout the country?  Interested?  I’m here – we can do it!  For now, take a ride before you start your week by cruising through our articles below!  And thanks for staying right by our side!!
