February 10, 2025, WTVT-TV Fox 13, Tampa – “Homeowners are going to see the kind of relief that they need,” said former deputy insurance commissioner Lisa Miller. She said the rate hike will actually drive down rates in the long run. Miller said the influx of contracting claims and lawsuits that followed are to blame for the skyrocketing premiums over previous years. “And they would say to you ‘We’re going to help you get a new roof. We work with your insurance company.’ And then when the insurance company says ‘What? You know your roof is 22 years old, it’s probably your responsibility to get it replaced,’ there’s a lawsuit,” said Miller. Despite the rising rates, Citizens Insurance rates are still lower than private market rates. “Florida has 7.6 million policies and the market is competitive right now. Insurance agents will tell you that and we’re in a really good place and it’s only going to get better,” said Miller. (Original story location: https://www.fox13news.com/video/1591088)
